Should you tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides in Canada generally say to tip on the amount before tax. Many payment terminals calculate the suggested tip on the total after tax, which makes the tip about 13% to 15% higher than it needs to be in most provinces. Use the “Tip calculated on” option to compare.
Quick mental math
For 15%, take 10% and add half of it. For 20%, double 10%. On an $85 bill: 10% is $8.50, so 15% is $12.75 and 20% is $17.
Splitting the bill fairly
The calculator splits the total evenly. If some people ordered much more, split the pre-tax subtotal by person first, then apply the same tax and tip percentage to each share.
