How to calculate square footage

For a rectangle, multiply the length by the width: a 12 ft by 14 ft bedroom is 168 sq ft. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, calculate each one and add them together, which is why the calculator has several areas.

Converting units

• 1 square metre = 10.764 square feet
• 1 square foot = 0.0929 square metres
• 1 square yard = 9 square feet

How much extra to buy

Add about 5% to 10% for straight flooring layouts and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, to allow for cuts and mistakes. For tile, keep a few spare pieces for future repairs.
