How to add sales tax
Total = price x (1 + rate). In Quebec, a $100 item costs $100 + $5.00 GST + $9.98 QST = $114.98. Since 2013, QST is calculated on the price before GST, not on top of it.
How to remove sales tax (reverse calculation)
Price before tax = total / (1 + rate). A $113 receipt in Ontario contains $113 / 1.13 = $100 before tax and $13 of HST. Choose “Remove tax from a total” to do it automatically.
For small businesses
You must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Quebec has the same $30,000 threshold for QST. Keep the tax amounts separate on invoices so you can claim input tax credits.
