Mean, median and mode

  • Mean is the usual average: add all the values and divide by how many there are.
  • Median is the middle value once the list is sorted (or the average of the two middle values).
  • Mode is the value that appears most often.

For 12, 15, 15, 18, 22 and 30, the mean is 18.67, the median is 16.5 and the mode is 15.

Which one should I use?

The median is better when a few very large or very small values would distort the mean, which is why house prices and incomes are usually reported as medians. The mean is best for evenly spread data like test scores.

Standard deviation

Standard deviation measures how spread out the numbers are. Use the population version when your list contains every value, and the sample version when it is a sample of a larger group.
